Project Coordinator

Duties Description

Standard Duties: The incumbent will report directly to the Manager of Intergovernmental Affairs and is a member of the Communications Team. The Project Coordinator is responsible for assisting in preparing outreach campaigns to elected officials and executing strategies that advance the policies and goals of the Department. They will assist in creating systems to communicate legislative, policy and regulatory guidance, including marketing materials, constituent assistance and research.

The Project Coordinator will also assist in developing messaging to provide solutions and create new opportunities with policymakers, elected and appointed officials at the city, state, and federal levels to promote the interests of the Department of Labor. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with planning, development and implementation of goals and program-area priorities efficiently and effectively while reporting to the Manager of Intergovernmental Affairs.
  • Assist with the creation of a comprehensive communications plan that incorporates goals and objectives of the Intergovernmental Affairs team by using data and key performance indicators.
  • Coordinate messaging for internal and external Department partners, including communicating developments with elected and appointed government officials in a clear and concise manner.
  • Contribute to writing newsletters, brochures, social media and website content, member briefings, scripting, and talking points to align with Department/Intergovernmental Affairs goals and objectives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with relevant local, state, and federal officials, stakeholders, and community partners with diverse perspectives through meetings, marketing, media, and key messaging.
  • Represent the Department in the field, navigate the Capitol, attend events, committee meetings and hearings, and prepare notes for summary and follow-up as instructed.
  • Assist in managing assigned constituent issue case load, working with Department divisions to provide timely updates on resolutions to elected officials.
  • Assist in developing and implementing special projects, processes, outreach efforts, and event planning to raise policymakers and appointed officials' awareness on issues or programs relating to Department focal areas.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree with emphasis on public administration, political science, government, communications, or related field, AND two years of specialized experience*

Substitution: J.D or master's degree in a related field may substitute for one year of specialized experience. PH.D. in a related field may substitute for two years of specialized experience

Preferred Qualifications

• 2-3 years of legislative and/or agency experience working in state and/or federal government, government relations/public affairs, media and or marketing

• Experience with the New York state legislative cycle, engaging with state legislators, attending and reporting on committee hearings

• Demonstrated leadership and strong diplomatic interpersonal skills, excellent judgment and political savviness

• Ability to accurately identify, analyze, and communicate legislative, regulatory and policy issues

• Knowledge and experience with state and federal legislative processes

• Strong written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including active listening skills

• Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.

• Ability to communicate complicated information into easily digestible segments and lay out plans with the goals and vision of the Department in mind

• Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and lead multiple projects

• Ability to work effectively at all levels within the Department

• Ability to learn and work in new software and electronic platforms

• Commitment to maintaining confidentiality

Additional Comments

Position-specific job duties may include altered work schedule or job assignments which require availability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments.

Candidate may be allowed to telecommute up to two (2) days per week dependent upon operational needs.
