Job Description

This is a forward-facing position that serves as the first point of contact for all customers which include residents, builders, contractors, utility companies, vendors and internal staff. The purpose of this position is to process building permit applications and ensure building compliance with safety codes and standards.

Job Functions

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Greet and assist applicants with forms and technical questions related to the building permit process.
  • Review, accept, and process permit applications, documents and associated fees; track all receipts and transactions for reconciliation
  • Provide technical support associated with permitting such as: respond to inquiries on development processes, codes, ordinances and permit review status; schedule, track and enter inspections/permits into databases; generate and process daily, monthly and annual statistics.
  • Provide quality customer service when answering phones, responding to inquiries and assisting with general information as it relates to the Building Department.
  • Perform a variety of day to day clerical and administrative work by answering and directing incoming calls, sorting mail, operating computer software, data entry, creating and managing records and facilitating letters, memos, invoices, purchase orders, credit card settlements and other documents as directed.
  • Maintain and update revisions to codes and ordinances; provide proper notification of revisions to builders, contractors, developers, engineers and architects
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Six months to one-year experience in a related field required.
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Valid TX Driver's License
  • Ability to obtain International Code Council (ICC) permit technician certification with one year from date of hire

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of:

  • Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office software.
  • Operation of standard office equipment including printers, scanners, copier, fax and phones.
Ability to:
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Maintain confidential information.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with Department co-workers, other City employees, and the public.

Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in a sedentary to light work, which may involve some lifting, reaching, twisting, stooping, bending, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of up to 25 lbs. Tasks may involve extended periods of time standing or sitting at a work station or keyboard.
