Permit Technician

The Permit Technician is responsible for maintaining the permitting system and process for the Planning and Building Department. This is accomplished by providing responsible administrative support to the daily operations of the department as well as Code Enforcement related processes by providing service for the City's permitting operation. The Permit Technician coordinates and processes residential and commercial building permit applications; provides timely service to all customers; assists in resolving applicant disputes; assists in scheduling building inspections; performs a wide variety of clerical and support duties: main operator for calls to the development and building department, types, files, distributes a variety of documents; responds to requests for information from management/supervisory personnel, or general public.

Examples of duties include managing the MyPermitNow software permitting system, accepting and reviewing applications and permits, reading maps and charts, answering inquiries from the public, handling complaints, maintaining customer information, processing payments, creating utility accounts, running queries, performing general administrative support tasks, operating office equipment, receiving and distributing correspondence, providing information on departmental and city policies, maintaining files, assisting at the reception desk, coordinating with the City Clerk, performing research tasks, and serving as the primary contact for Temporary Construction Noise permitting.

Typical qualifications include graduation from an accredited High School or equivalent, plus two years of work experience in administrative support. A Bachelor's degree in urban planning or public administration is preferred and may substitute for the required experience. Special qualifications include construction or building experience, successful completion of a criminal background check, and obtaining Permit Technician ICC Certification within 24 months of hire.

Supplemental information includes knowledge of standard office practices, building practices and permitting processes, strong interpersonal and customer service skills, proficiency in operating office equipment, computer use for data entry and record management, experience handling cash and processing payments, ability to organize work effectively, and ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
