This position receives calls from customers and provides call routing and general information to customers regarding tax payments and motor vehicle information.

Major Duties

Answers and routes incoming calls on a complex digital telephone system.

Provides information obtained from a variety of sources to field questions from the public regarding departments, phone numbers, operational hours, etc.

Assists callers in identifying needs and then routing calls appropriately.

Updates and maintains personal copies of the staff directory and other resources to ensure accurate dispensing of information.

Takes calls, messages, and documents incoming calls.

Supports customers by managing calls each day efficiently while maintaining professionalism and an upbeat tone.

Collects and verifies telephone numbers, addresses, and proper spelling of names.

Operates switchboard and routes incoming calls to appropriate departments.

Responds to customer inquiries with patience and positivity, and to establish excellent first impressions.

Maintains accurate records of calls placed and received.

Performs any other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of county and departmental policies and procedures.

Knowledge of information management skills and practices.

Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.

Knowledge of computer operations to include the use of email, web browsers, and customer service techniques.

Ability to think quickly and communicate orally with a variety of callers; handle a high volume of calls (e.g., 100 calls per hour).

Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.

Must be able to type at least 30 wpm.

Complexity/Scope of Work

The work consists of related technical duties. The need for accuracy contributes to the complexity of the position.

The purpose of this position is to provide clerical support for department operations. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of those operations.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

Occasionally

Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.

Adjusting or moving objects up to 20 pounds in all directions.

Light work that includes carrying objects up to 20 pounds.

Constantly

Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.

Communicating with others to exchange information.

Repeating motions that may include the use of wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Working in noisy environments.

Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.

Other Requirements/Information

Must possess a valid and current driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

The Webb County Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this position. Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, and a criminal background check are required.

This position is covered by Civil Service; therefore, is subject to the Civil Service Rules and Regulations in addition to all other Webb County policies.

Valid Texas Driver's License*

*If the applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver's License must be obtained prior to employment.
