Job Summary:

  • Provides direct and indirect patient care in the Emergency Department (ED).
  • Meets the communication needs of the patient/family, departmental staff, and medical staff.
  • Implements directions from physicians and nursing staff.
  • Demonstrates basic computer knowledge.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities.
  • Demonstrates performance consistent with the mission, philosophy, and goals of the unit and organization; remains flexible to changing systems.
  • Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits.
  • Treats staff, physicians, patients, and families with consideration and respect.
  • Enters and verifies orders in the computer system.
  • Documents the time orders were placed in the computer on ED record.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to charge nurse, coworkers, and physicians.
  • Consults other departments, as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs.
  • Takes specimens to the laboratory as needed.
  • Orders office supplies and printing weekly. Assists in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
  • Interacts professionally with patients and their families and provides explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.
  • Maintains age-specific safety precautions.
  • Obtains appropriate nursing staff to assist physicians in the care of the patient.
  • Maintains good working relationships both within the department and with other departments.
  • Meets current standards and policies in documentation.
  • Answers telephone and intercom in a polite manner and communicates information to the appropriate personnel or family.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, nursing and hospital policies and procedures and standards, including infection control, safety regulations, and guidelines.
  • Maintains an accurate and orderly filing system.
  • Knowledgeable and assists ER Director in implementing core measures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledgeable and sensitive to patients' rights.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Skill/Education Requirements:

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.
