Position Summary:

Catalent, Inc. is a leading global Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO), and the Boston-area facility is Catalent's global Center of Excellence for spray dry dispersion and Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI) capsule manufacture and packaging. The site features inhaled powder spray drying, as well as multiple commercial-scale lines for capsule filling and blister packaging. On-site spray dryers include best-in-class GEA Niro SD1, SD4 and SD7, the latter being the largest CGMP unit of its kind for DPI in North America.

Catalent Pharma Solutions in Chelsea, MA is hiring a Director of Technical Services who is a key member of the Boston site senior leadership team and is responsible for providing scientific, technical, and operational leadership across technology transfer, scale-up, validation, and commercial support activities, with a strong emphasis on spray drying and advanced oral dose technologies.

This role leads and develops a high-performing product development engineering team that supports the full product lifecycle—from early technical evaluation and client onboarding through commercial manufacturing, process optimization, and lifecycle management. The Director serves as the primary technical authority for spray-drying and encapsulation process optimization, process scaling-up, clinical supply and emphasis on inhalation and oral amorphous solid dispersions.

The Role:

  • Partner with and support the Business Development and Commercial Operations teams on showcasing Boston's expertise and knowledge around transferring, scale-up, optimization, validation and commercialization of solid dose products
  • Work with both external and internal customers to define scope and project plan of all tech transfer activities
  • Ensure processes developed for new products are safe, compliant, efficient, and operations-friendly
  • Assist in preparation of timelines, batch records, protocols and other project related documentation
  • Accountable for ensuring a seamless transition from validation to commercial launch of new products
  • Ensures that all applicable processes and SOPs are adhered to during the execution of technology transfers
  • Active involvement in the product development process via proactive interaction with the product development team beginning with the onset of activities in the manufacturing environment
  • Partner with Engineering to identify equipment requirements, streamline equipment layout, provide engineering solutions to error proof and make process more user friendly
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Candidate:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Science/Pharmaceutical) with 10+ years of hands-on experience with product/process development in pharmaceutical manufacturing; OR Master's Degree (Science/Pharmaceutical) with 8+ years of hands-on experience; OR Doctorate Degree (Science/Pharmaceutical) with 5+ years of hands-on experience
  • 5+ Years of leadership experience
  • Minimum of for years' experience with pharmaceutical unit operations related to particle engineering, spray-drying, powders and capsule filling.
  • Ability to troubleshoot/ solve complex manufacturing problems including identifying root cause and appropriate correct actions under tight timelines.
  • Advanced spray-drying and encapsulation process knowledge and emphasis on inhalation and oral amorphous solid dispersion
  • Demonstrable leadership experience at Catalent (including but not limited to participation in Catalent-sponsored leadership programs such as NGGL, GOLD, LEAD Now, GM Excellence, and GROW) may be considered in place of external experience;

Pay

The anticipated salary range for this position in Massachusetts is $183,800-250,000 plus an annual bonus target. The final salary offered to a successful candidate may vary, and will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to: the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, skillset, education, business needs, etc. Catalent is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.
