Open Science Implementation Contractor

A 1-year remote contractor opportunity is currently available with the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of Science Quality and Library Services (OSQLS) Knowledge Management (KM) Team. The OSQLS KM team is responsible for a suite of systems that support electronic scientific clearance; a public access repository; content management; and, routing of other documents, forms, and plans. Knowledge Management systems support the Centers, Institutes, and Offices (CIOs) at the CDC. The KM team also provides training and guidance on system use to support research and compliance. Among these systems is the publicly available CDC Stacks repository for public health publications and data tailored for public health research. This repository is retained indefinitely and is available for public health professionals, researchers, as well as the general public, in compliance with federal public access policy and law. Other systems developed and maintained by the KM team to support the scientific research and publishing process are designed for internal CDC use only. Each of these systems supports CDC's implementation of Public Access and Open Science (OS). As CDC puts greater emphasis on Open Science concepts and practices, the Knowledge Management team has been tasked to lead Open Science implementation. The KM team would like to add a talented and experienced Open Science expert to their team. Joining the OSQLS KM team, the selected candidate will provide support to CDC researchers in creating open science packages that enable replication and support transparency; will analyze existing KM systems and recommend enhancements to meet OS goals; and, will work with the KM Open Science team to rapidly create and provide OS implementation training and guidance to CDC researchers.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Collaborative development and authoring of KM team Open Science training materials and guidelines;
  • Proposing enhancements to KM software systems to improve Open Science practices;
  • Developing and proposing new Open Science workflows;
  • Working with researchers to integrate Open Science principles into their research workflows;
  • Liaise with one or more CDC CIOs and provide OS outreach, instruction, and research support;
  • Providing reference and research support to CDC researchers seeking OS implementation guidance;
  • Collaborating with CDC employees from the Office of Science and other CDC CIOs in the implementation of OS practices; and,
  • Participating in CDC and other federal open science committees and working groups, as opportunities arise and are appropriate.

Required experience and/or knowledge includes:

  • A Master's degree or Doctorate degree in Library Science; Information Science; Computer Science; or, a related field;
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state, academic, and/or global Open Science guidelines and practices;
  • Worked with a variety of Open Science tools;
  • Excellent communication, training, and/or documentation creation skills;
  • Expert knowledge of the Persistent Identifier (PID) landscape;
  • Experience working in one or more PID assignment interfaces; and,
  • Experience working collaboratively in a diverse environment.

Preferred experience and/or knowledge includes:

  • Demonstrated federal, state, or academic Open Science leadership experience;
  • Research experience implementing Open Science practices;
  • Created Open Science (or similar) training materials and/or provided such training to practicing researchers;
  • Experience contributing to or maintaining a document, data, or software repository;
  • Experience with library reference or IT help desk procedures, workflows, and ticketing systems; and/or,
  • Web development experience.

Work week and position duration: This contract position is full-time (40 hours per week) for one (1) year (up to September 30, 2026) and may be extended, contingent upon project needs and funding availability. As this is a contract position, the chosen candidate will NOT become an employee of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Position location: This is a remote work-eligible contract position. The chosen candidate will not need to relocate. If a candidate is chosen from the Atlanta area, they will be given the option of on-site work with telework days, if they choose. Remote workers are provided a CDC laptop. Remote workers may be required to visit a federal office near their home to procure a CDC id card.

Pay and benefits: The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $50.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
