Automation Controls Field Support Technician

Automation Controls Technician will primarily focus on supporting field service calls at customer locations. This role involves providing technical support for industrial equipment-diagnosing, repairing, and commissioning automation and control systems. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with PLCs, HMIs, motor controls, and automation hardware/software, and will thrive in a technical support role.

Essential Functions

  • Respond to field service requests to troubleshoot, repair, and update automation and control systems.
  • Diagnose control system issues (hardware and software) remotely or onsite using test equipment, schematics, and software tools.
  • Modify and update PLC and HMI programs to support system upgrades, repairs, or customer-requested changes.
  • May assist with the installation, commissioning, and startup of new automation equipment at Amada facilities or customer sites.
  • Provide on-site technical support, training, and guidance for field service technicians, Amada manufacturing staff, or customer staff.
  • Document service support activities, including test results, system changes, and recommended improvements.
  • Work closely with the engineering team to communicate system updates, field issues, and field or customer feedback.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures and customer site requirements during all service activities.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Automation Technology, or equivalent technical training.
  • 3+ years of experience in industrial automation, field service, or a related technical role.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting PLC-based control systems (Omron, Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar).
  • Experience with industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control system drawings.
  • Skilled with test instruments such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and signal generators.
  • Experience with VFDs, servo drives, and motion control systems.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety regulations and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems and industrial HMIs.
  • Previous experience in a service technician, field engineer, or plant maintenance role.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot electromechanical systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently in the field with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to travel (up to 50%) including overnight stays.

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), organized and detailed-oriented.
  • Experience in creating schematics, flowcharts and other electrical design documentation.
  • Experience with ladder logic, function blocks, structured text and or sequential function charts.
  • Relies on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals.

Pay Range:

  • Salary - $65,000.00-$85,000.00

Work Environment:

  • On site in Brea, CA
  • Office setting - answering service calls.

Reporting Relationship:

  • Department Manager or group supervisor

  • None

Travel:

  • Frequent travel may be required during machine developing and debugging period.
